Social-networking services ramping up
About 2 million people are likely to descend on the nation’s capital — many with the intention of documenting every moment of their trip.
That means a crush of text messages to friends back in Minnesota, blog entries on Twitter and plenty of photos and videos recorded on, and sent from, mobile devices. “I plan on texting my friends a lot, and may take photos on my phone,” says Catherine Chin, 26, a travel consultant in Berkeley, Calif.
Chin illustrates the digital constituency of Obama, himself a devout BlackBerry user who texted his vice presidential choice — Joe Biden — to millions of supporters, and helped redefine how candidates raise funds and seek volunteers on the Internet.
Kakul Srivastava, general manager of Flickr, a popular photo- and video-sharing service, expects a healthy jump from its daily average of 3 million photos and videos uploaded to the service.
Those who can’t make it to D.C. won’t be left out of the social-networking swirl. The Presidential Inaugural Committee is encouraging Americans to hold inaugural balls in their neighborhoods and send text messages and videos to a virtual ball (www.pic2009.org/page/content/neighborhoodballparty), in conjunction with an ABC program Tuesday. Some texts and videos could appear on the show.
